Jogen Chowdhury was born on 16 February 1939 at Faridpur in undivided Bengal and came to Kolkata during the Partition, where he was educated at the Government College of Art & Craft and at École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris.

Beside his numerous paintings and exhibitions, he has written extensively on contemporary art. After his long stint at the Rashtrapati Bhavan as the Keeper of Art, he joined Kala Bhavana of Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan as a teacher from where he retired as a Professor of the Department of Painting and now works in the capacity of Professor Emeritus.

He was elected a Member of Parliament from West Bengal in 2014 and lives and works in Santiniketan.
