Born Arjumand Banu Begum, she was the Empress consort of the Mughal Empire from 1628 to 1631. At 19, she was married to Prince Khurram, later known by his royal name Shah Jahan, who conferred upon her the title “Mumtaz Mahal”. She was the chief wife and the power behind the emperor. She died in Burhanpur, during the birth of her fourteenth child. The Taj Mahal in Agra was commissioned by her husband to act as her tomb.
