Shivaji’s father, Shahaji Bhonsle, served the Ahmadnagar and Bijapur Sultanates in Deccan and the Mughal Empire at different points in his life. As a member of the Bhonsle clan, he had inherited the Pune and Supe (Baramati district) fiefs. This chromolithograph is inspired by the 17th century Deccan school painting.
